A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese-American woman, Nicky Chen, to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to find her hometown overrun with crime and corruption, Nicky uses her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice — all while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her.
Anyone still watching this? Did it get any better? Stopped mid s02

It´s getting more like a soap opera than a action/drama show. Thanks anyway for everything PSA.

Another fucking gender-swopped reboot. Are these fuckers hellbent in pissing me te fuck off all the time with this shite?!
I don't need to watch the pilot to know this a steaming pile of Dung Flu.
I loved the original, but Bruce Lee was supposed to play David Carradine's charatcter – who fucking pretended to be Chinese. Seriously, he couldn't have been more fucking Honky!
Decided to watch ep. 1 out of curiosity. I did not find it as bad as I thought I would; it had its moments, though mixed with cliche and cheesy elements, as Polack mentions. It is NOTHING like the original. Plus it's clear that this will be in your face with the PC banner. Overall, based on the pilot, I would rate it as mediocre at best, and today I don't have time for mediocre.
Thanks a lot for all your excellent work Val'n'Doc 🙂
I watched this pilot last night – IMHO it's really bad, naive, cliche, cheesy TV. Embarrassing, really. Cringe worthy…

These modern reboots always make me nostalgic for the originals. I loved Kung Fu when I was a kid, though having seen a couple of episodes in the past 10 years or so, I realize that Caradine's martial arts "skills" were crap. Don't know why they had to use the Kung Fu title for this series though, as it seems to have very little to do with the original. Geez Louise, just give it a new title!
Well, this ought to be interesting. According to review headlines, this reboot of the '70s series "rights the wrongs of its ancestor" and "improves Asian representation on TV", and is big on *family dynamics*. Hopefully – with the focus on making social and political statements, and being wholesome family viewing – it doesn't suck too much. Anyway, thanks PSA – I never even knew this was coming.
What's there to right? The original's setting is a century and a half ago, when Chinese immigrants WERE treated disrespectfully by most in the US as nothing more than cheap labor. If there's an issue it should be how were the Chinese actors of the show treated in the 70's. To be fair, I don't recall a lot about the show back then, so maybe there was more stereotyping than I remember, but still…
One of the 'wrongs to right' would be the fact they cast a white guy to play a mixed race American/Chinese character.
They rejected Bruce Lee for the role because of his race and yes, Bruce was American/Chinese.
To be clear, no matter what they say, this is NOT a reboot; it is not even really a re-imagining. It is a completely different animal. The only thing it has in common with the original is that the protagonist is Chinese (or half Chinese, in Caine's case), they both use Kung fu, and they both get flashback advice from their masters. Period. End of sentence. There ain't no more.

Dung Fu 😂
I agree with Prodigal, not so bad.

Lol how does *NOT Kung Fu* sound?
Well that synopsis seems like… too many things happening at once.
Anyway, if anyone watches the episode, do get back with a review if you can.
Thanks
It's another CW girl power show… No better than the average CW girl power show. Better than Batwoman, but that isn't saying much.
Couldn't have said it better myself
